Run it on your own system
You need two numbers and no expertise. The first is how old the equipment is — look for the manufacture date on the data plate stuck to the side of the outdoor condenser or the furnace cabinet, usually in the serial number. The second is the written repair quote your technician just handed you. Multiply them together.

Why it works at all
The rule is doing two things at once with one multiplication. Age stands in for how much life the equipment has left, and the repair quote stands in for how badly it has failed. A cheap fix on a young unit is worth doing. A big fix on an old unit is money you will spend again, on a system that owes you nothing. Multiplying them catches the case where each number alone looks tolerable and the combination does not.

Three times the rule is wrong
- Equipment got more expensive. The threshold was set when a replacement cost less than it does now. When a new system costs more, a repair that the rule calls a waste can still be the cheaper year.
- Refrigerant changed underneath you. Systems built for older refrigerant are getting harder and pricier to service as those refrigerants are phased down. A modest repair on that kind of unit can be the first of several, and the rule cannot see that coming.
- The system is still under warranty. If the part is covered, the quote you are multiplying is mostly labor, and the rule reads the situation as far worse than it is. Check the warranty before you do any arithmetic.
What the rule leaves out entirely
- How often it is breaking. Three service calls in one season tells you more than any single quote. The rule only ever sees one repair.
- What it costs to run. An old, low-efficiency system can be quietly expensive every month in a way no repair invoice shows.
- Whether the house is comfortable. Rooms that never get warm or cool are often a duct or sizing problem, and a new box outside will not fix either.
- How long you are staying. Replacing a system you will hand to a buyer in eight months is a different decision from replacing one you will run for fifteen years.
What to ask the technician before you decide
- What is the manufacture date on the equipment? Ask them to show you the plate.
- Is this part under warranty, and what does that change about the quote?
- What refrigerant does this system use, and what does that mean for servicing it in five years?
- If I fix this, what is the next thing likely to go, and roughly what does that one cost?
- Give me the repair quote and a replacement quote in writing, on the same visit.
That last one matters more than the rule does. A contractor who will put both numbers on paper is letting you make the comparison yourself. One who will only quote the replacement has already made the decision for you.
